Top Tips on Keeping your Swimming Pool Clean

If you have a swimming pool in your back garden, you will want to ensure it is kept in the best condition possible, and with this comes some kind of regular maintenance.

Your pool should be kept sparkling, welcoming and ready to use when the mood takes you.  By keeping on top of pool water maintenance to your in-ground and out-ground swimming pool, you will be minimising any unforeseen costs at a later date.

Here are some of the top tips on keeping your swimming pool clean.

UV Lamps

UV Lamps (ultraviolet) emits radiation wavelengths of 253.7nm, which kills bacteria. The SP UV will continuously provide clean and fresh water and is not harmful to the environment. It works by the water being pumped through the UV unit. The water is then exposed to UV-C radiation. It is at this stage that bacteria are destroyed, along with viruses and other unwanted organisms.

Top Tips On Keeping Your Swimming Pool Clean

Pool Water Chemistry

Even if you have invested in a UV Lamp, you will still need to check the pool’s chemistry, which is a relatively simple process. You can purchase test strip kits that will indicate how chemically balanced the pool water is when used. My Pool Direct recommends you test your pool water once or twice a week, especially during the summer months. During cooler months, this can be reduced to every couple of weeks, even if the pool is still in use.

PH Levels

To keep your pool comfortable and safe to swim in, the pH level needs to be between 7.2 and 7.8.

When pH levels start to rise, you will notice that the chlorine is far less active or effective. Some people make the common mistake of adding more chlorine.  However, if you control the pH correctly, you won’t need to add so much. An important tip to remember is the lower the levels are, the less chlorine will be needed.

Keep the Skimmer Basket Empty

In most pools, the skimmer basket can be found on the side of the pool. Its purpose is to skim the pools surface, avoiding any debris or contaminants becoming so saturated, that they sink to the bottom of the pool. The more often you empty your skimmer, the more effective it will be. Simply open the panel and remove the basket. Try to keep the basket close to empty at all times.

Hair and Lint Pot

The hair and lint pot is another piece of equipment that will collect debris if it happens to pass by the skimmer basket. It will need cleaning every couple of weeks, but that will vary depending on the number of people using the pool.
To clear the hair and lint pot is a simple process. Turn the pump off, releasing pressure on the system. Pump lids may vary, so check instructions to prevent any damage during maintenance.

Check on the Pools Water Level

It is important to make sure your pools water level is correct. If it is too high or too low, it will affect the efficiency of the pool skimmer and pump. Keep the water level central to the skimmer or pool tile.

Depending on your chlorinator unit style and the features, you will be able to add chlorine as and when it is needed. You should regularly check your automatic deck chlorinator for chlorine tablet levels and potential clogging.

Ozone Generator

You may have installed an ozone generator. Ozone is a type of oxygen that will purify pool water as it instantly reacts to any contaminants that may be present. Keep checking that your generator is working effectively, ensuring the light is on at all times.

Clean the Pool Filter

Look out for common signs that your pool’s filter needs cleaning.

It should only need to be cleaned a couple of times each year, depending on how much the pool is used. Here are some signs to look out for:

You notice an obstruction at the bottom of the pool
The hose cleaner is not performing properly
Your swimming pool starts to emit unusual odours

Regularly Monitor the Structure of the Pool

It is important to remember it isn’t only the water that needs to be monitored. You should keep a check for the following:

If you notice that cracks are starting to appear around your pool, immediately caulk it with small amounts of clear silicone.

Weak Walls

If the walls start to become weak, you may have rust or corrosion that will need to be taken care of immediately.

Safety Measures

If you have a young family or pets, you likely have safety measures put in place. These may consist of gates, alarms and locks. Check they are working at all times to prevent any accidents from occurring. My Pool Direct strongly recommend installing as many safety precautions as possible.
