How to Install a Fibreglass Pool

Planning & Preparation

Before starting, check whether planning permission is required. In most cases, swimming pools fall under permitted development, but it’s always best to confirm with your local authority. You should also plan how the pool will be delivered and positioned, including crane access if required.

Choosing the Right Location

Select a location that receives good sunlight, is at least 2 metres from structures, and allows easy access to utilities. Avoid placing the pool under trees, on slopes, or too far from equipment areas.

Setting Out the Pool Area

Mark out the pool dimensions using string lines and pegs to ensure accuracy before excavation begins.

Excavation & Base Preparation

Once the excavation has been completed and the earth removed, it is essential to install a soakaway system at the base of the hole. This can be achieved by laying perforated pipework along the length of the excavation, allowing groundwater to be effectively managed.

The pipework should then be connected via a tee into a chamber positioned at one end of the excavation. This chamber allows for the installation of a submersible pump, which can be used to remove any groundwater that may accumulate over time.

After the drainage system is in place, a layer of pea gravel should be added over the pipework to provide a stable base. This should then be covered with a waterproof membrane to protect the structure. Once complete, a reinforced concrete slab—typically incorporating mesh—can be installed to form a solid and level foundation for the pool.

Delivery & Positioning

The pool is delivered as a single unit and positioned using a crane. Ensure it is level and correctly aligned before proceeding.

Backfilling & Filling

Begin by filling the pool with water to approximately one-third of its depth. At this stage, backfill around the pool using wet-mix concrete and allow it to set. Once this has cured, continue by filling the pool to around two-thirds full, then backfill using dry-mix concrete or pea gravel, ensuring it is packed firmly into place.

It is recommended to install shuttering around the rear of lights, jets, and skimmers to allow future access if required. These areas should be packed with pea gravel to provide adequate support while maintaining accessibility.

Finally, fill the pool to its full depth and complete the backfilling process by installing a concrete ring beam. This provides structural support for coping stones, which finish the top edge of the pool. A concrete surround can then be added, followed by paving or other finishes as required.

Plumbing & Equipment Installation

Install and connect pumps, filters, skimmers, and pipework to ensure proper circulation and filtration.

Pool Surround & Finishing

Install a reinforced surround and complete with paving, decking, or coping. Use slip-resistant materials suitable for wet environments.

Final Setup & Start-Up

Fill the pool, start the system, and balance water chemicals to ensure safe and effective operation.
